Rishabh Pant, who was the protagonist in India’s series victory over Australia and England, will lead Delhi Capitals in the upcoming IPL season. Shreyas Iyer, who led DC last season, was ruled out of the tournament due to a shoulder injury he picked up in the ODI series against England.
Rishabh Pant’s first assignment as captain of Delhi Capitals will be their opening fixture against Chennai Super Kings on April 10 at the Wankhede Stadium. The left-hander was excited with the prospect of playing against MS Dhoni, from whom he has gained valuable experience.
“My first match as captain will be against Mahi Bhai. It will be a good experience for me as I have learned a lot from him. I have my own experience as a player as well. I’ll apply my own experience and the learnings from MS Dhoni, and try to do something different against CSK,” Rishabh Pant was quoted as saying in a DC media release.
Delhi Capitals have managed to reach the playoffs in the past two seasons under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer. In 2019, the franchise finished on the third spot, whereas, last year, they ended as runner-ups to Mumbai Indians. Rishabh Pant is confident that his team will continue with their good performances this season as well. The 23-year old also thanked his franchise and coach, Ricky Ponting for giving him an opportunity to lead the side.
“I would like to thank all the coaches and the owners for giving me this opportunity and I am looking forward to making most of this opportunity. We haven’t won a title yet and I will try my level best to get a title this year.
“We’ve been playing nicely as a team for last two-three years and our preparations are going on well. Everyone looks in a great frame of mind. Everyone is giving their 100 percent and is happy in the team environment, and that’s what you want as a captain,” Rishabh added.
Rishabh Pant scored 343 runs last season in the IPL, at an average of 31.18. However, the Delhi batsman could manage to score just one half-century, which came against Mumbai Indians in the finals.
