Rishabh Pant has been appointed as the captain of Delhi Capitals for the IPL 2021 season. The wicket-keeper will lead the side in the absence of the regular captain, Shreyas Iyer who has been ruled out of the season due to a shoulder injury he picked up in the first ODI against England.
Good news keep pouring in for Rishabh Pant as after establishing himself as a regular in all three formats of the game for India, he will get an opportunity to showcase his captaincy skills. The left-hander has been the protagonist in India’s recent success against Australia and England. Despite missing the first Test against Australia, he ended up being India’s top run-getter in the four match Test series.
He continued his impressive form in the home series against England, amassing runs in all three formats of the game. Pant smashed 155 runs in the last two ODIs, after he replaced the injured, Shreyas Iyer in the team.
Rishabh Pant was obliged to be appointed as the captain of Delhi Capitals as he aims to lead his side to a maiden IPL title. Last year, Delhi were within striking distance of the trophy, before they were humbled by Mumbai Indians in the finals.
“Delhi is where I grew up, and where my IPL journey began six years ago. To lead this team one day is a dream I’ve always harbored. And today, as that dream comes true, I feel humbled. I am truly grateful, especially to our team owners, who considered me capable enough for this role. With an amazing coaching staff, and a plethora of accomplished seniors around me, I can’t wait to give my absolute best for Delhi Capitals,” Pant said after being appointed as the captain.
Shreyas Iyer had recommended Rishabh Pant’s name to lead Delhi Capitals for the upcoming season and stated that he trusts the Indian batsman to do a fine job. “When I sustained the shoulder injury, and Delhi Capitals needed a leader for this edition of the IPL, I had no doubt that Rishabh would be the best man for the job. He has all my good wishes to make amazing things happen with our absolutely incredible team. I’m going to miss the team tremendously, and will be cheering for them throughout,” Iyer said.
Delhi Head Coach, Ricky Ponting said that the previous two seasons had been successful for the franchise, as Delhi Capitals managed to reach the playoffs on both occasions under Shreyas Iyer’s able leadership. “The previous two seasons under Shreyas’ leadership have been incredible, and the results speak for themselves. This is a tremendous opportunity for young Rishabh, who is coming off successful stints against Australia and England which will no doubt give him the confidence needed to take on a new role that comes with a lot more responsibility. The coaching group is excited to work with him, and we can’t wait for the season to get started,” said Ponting.
On an individual basis, Rishabh Pant did not have the best IPL season last year, managing to score 343 runs in his 14 innings at an average of 31.18. However, he will look forward to lead his side from the front this season as they open their campaign against the three time champions, Chennai Super Kings on April 10 at the Wankhede Stadium.
