Lungi Ngidi played his first match of the IPL 2021 season on Wednesday, as Chennai Super Kings secured a thrilling victory over Kolkata Knight Riders. The South African speedster replaced DJ Bravo in the playing eleven, and delivered an impressed performance. He picked up three wickets in his four over spell, and conceded just 27 runs. The pacer revealed his relationship with his West Indian counterpart, who has been taught him several things. Ngidi stated that he was learning to bowl the slower ball from the experienced Bravo, something which he could execute successfully against KKR.
“There was a lot of pressure, Bravo has been doing very well for CSK. So, I had to come in and fill his shoes. Have worked very closely with Bravo on the slower bowls at the death. One of the slower bowls he has been teaching me for a long time came off and got us a wicket,” the South African stated.
Lungi Ngidi revealed that he was a bit nervous when Chennai Super Kings’ batsman were dominating the KKR bowlers at the start of the innings. Faf du Plessis and Ruturaj Gaikwad got off to a blistering start, handing the Men in Yellow an early advantage. Deepak Chahar was the standout bowler for CSK on Wednesday, as he picked up four early wickets to put his side in the driving seat.
Lungi Ngidi picked up key wickets of Dinesh Karthik and Rahul Tripathi, who were looking on-course to scoring a huge score. “It was good (on his first appearance of the season). Watching you guys out there dominate the bowlers makes a bowler a bit nervous in the change room. It was good to get out there and a few early wickets helped,” said the South African.
“Deepak Chahar was on fire so I just tried to back him up a bit. Throughout the innings, I just tried to chip away at their batsmen. They were flowing at a stage, hitting boundaries for fun. I just tried to keep taking wickets,” Lungi Ngidi said in a video released by the IPL.
