2020 was a dismal year and it didn’t even spare Chennai Super Kings, otherwise the most consistent franchise in the Indian Premier League. For the first time in the 11 years of their existence, Chennai failed to make it to the playoffs of IPL. They have won the competition three times and have set a ridiculously high standard of dominance and consistency, however found themselves lacking in several departments. One such area was the lack of enough energy, enthusiasm and youth in the side. As such, CSK are expected to release some players including the likes of Kedar Jadhav and invest in young potential instead.
During the 2018 auction, Chennai Super Kings had invested heavily in Kedar Jadhav and got him for Rs. 7.8 crore. He has spent three years with the side but attracted a lot of criticism with his performances in the most recent edition of the IPL where Jadhav’s lack of intent cost CSK many matches.
A source close to the CSK management told InsideSport that the franchise is keen on moving on from the 35-year-old and are looking to invest in youngsters. “Jadhav was not in best of form in IPL 2020. He was also struggling with his fitness. CSK will move on from Jadhav in IPL 2021, everyone in the team management feels that it will be prudent to take this hard call and invest in future,” the source said.
The decision makes all the more sense given that Kedar Jadhav could only score 62 runs in eight matches in the tournament in Dubai and had a strike rate of 93.33, not fitting for T20 cricket. His fitness issues are also a major concern for the side.
According to several reports, the IPL Governing Council held a virtual meeting earlier in the week after which the BCCI opened the trading window. The mini auction for IPL 2021 is most likely to take place on February 11 where certain teams including CSK are expected to rejuvenate their line-up.
