The 2021 IPL auction turned out to be a real deal-breaker. The record for the most cash spent on a player in the auctions was broken and franchises broke the bank for several other players, which turned this year’s auction into a frenzy. Let’s take a recap at some of the major deals and signings made by the franchises:
Punjab Kings: The team co-owned by Priety Zinta had the most money to spend in this year’s IPL and they lived up to the billing. They bought Australian speedsters Jhye Richardson and Riley Meredith for a combined INR 22 crores. Jhye Richardson became the third most expensive bowler in the Indian Premier League. They also added England’s star batsman, the number one ranked T20 batsman in the world Dawid Malan. Moises Henriques was also purchased for INR 4.4 crores!
Rajasthan Royals: Rajasthan Royals also made several high-profile purchases this year. The signing of Chris Morris for INR 16.5 crores, making him the most expensive IPL buy of all time stole all headlines. Rajasthan also picked up Shivam Dube for INR 4.4 crores and also made smart purchases on Mustafizur Rahman and Liam Livingstone.
Royal Challengers Bangalore: Headlining the list of most high-profile players for RCB in the auction is Australian hard-hitter Glenn Maxwell. Maxwell was picked up for INR 14.25 crores and he’ll be seen next to Kohli and De Villiers this season! RCB also added Kiwi all-rounder Kyle Jamieson for INR 15 crore, making him the third most expensive player in history. RCB also picked up Dan Christian and Daniel Sams in the auction.
Mumbai Indians: Mumbai Indians did not splash a lot of cash this year in the IPL 2021 auctions. The acquisition of Adam Milne for INR 3.2 crore was their most high-profile buy this year. Piyush Chawla, James Neesham and Nathan Coulter Nile were also added to the side while the selection of Arjun Tendulkar also received a lot of attention.
Delhi Capitals: Delhi Capitals purchased former Australia and Royals captain Steve Smith for jut INR 3.2 crores! The signing could prove to be extremely valuable for Capitals. They also added Indian pacer Umesh Yadav for INR 1 crore. All-rounder Tom Curran proved to be a bit more expensive and Delhi went on to spend INR 5.25 crores on the Englishman. They also made a smart purchase on Sam Billings for just INR 2 crores.
Chennai Super Kings: The signings of Krishnappa Gowtham with INR 9 crores and Moeen Ali with INR crores were the most high-profile purchases by Chennai Super Kings in this year’s auction. Gowtham became the most expensive uncapped player in IPL. CSK also added Cheteshwar Pujara for just INR 50 lakhs.
Kolkata Knight Riders: Kolkata Knight Riders secured the services of all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan for INR 3.2 crores this year. Shakib will be wearing the KKR jersey once again after winning the IPL with them in 2012 and 2014. The addition of Ben Cutting and Harbhajan Singh also attracted interest.
Sunrisers Hyderabad: Sunrisers Hyderabad added just three players as they had a wallet of just INR 10.75 crores. Kedar Jadhav was purchased for INR 2 crores while they added value with the signing of Afghan spinner Mujeeb Ur Rehman for INR 1.5 crores. SRH also signed Jagadeesha Suchith for INR 30 lakhs.
