The exclusion of Jasprit Bumrah for the 2nd Test is surprising: Gavaskar

Jasprit Bumrah

Jasprit Bumrah being rested for the second Test in Chennai took a lot of people by surprise. Former Indian legend, Sunil Gavaskar wasn’t too impressed by the decision. The idea that Jasprit Bumrah has been under constant stress of playing matches was the major reason behind the Indian team opting to go with Mohammed Siraj instead of Bumrah before the pink ball Test in Motera.

The second Test is going to be absolutely crucial, given the fact that India lost the first Test in Chennai by a margin of 226 runs. The bowling unit, especially the pace department appeared to lack teeth and the batting wasn’t up to the mark either. Ahead of the second match, the team shuffled things up and Shahbaz Nadeem and Washington Sundar were replaced by Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav. Meanwhile, Mohammed Siraj was included in Bumrah’s place.

Sunil Gavaskar lashed out at the management suggesting that at the number one bowler in the team cannot be excluded from the team this way in the name of workload management. He also believes that Bumrah would’ve had plenty of time to recover after the second Test as there is a healthy gap of a week between the second and third match.

“You don’t rest your number one bowler in the name of workload management. Jasprit Bumrah is India’s number one bowler with the new ball, while Ravichandran Ashwin is the number one spinner. When you have lost the opening game of such a crucial series, you can’t rest your number one pacer. I am baffled by Bumrah’s snub, as there is a seven-day recovery time after the second Test match,” Sunil Gavaskar said while speaking on Star Sports.
