20 Best Moments from IPL 2020 Cricket

Best Moments from IPL 2020 Cricket

The 2020 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2020) has provided us with moments of utter belligerence and sometimes, jaw-dropping audacity that it was simply not enough to get rid of the colossus. It has been fun and frolic, a couple of months of distraction from the utter disaster that the world is going through at the moment. Hence, it is only prudent that we go back and recollect those moments in our latest segment, reliving the time and magic of IPL 2020, in no particular order.

20. Best Moments from IPL 2020 Cricket: Double Super Over

Best Moments from IPL 2020: Bumrah Cleans up Mayank Agarwal

It was a day of incredible coincidence when Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab tied the game in real-time to push it to the Super Over after a similar finish in the afternoon game between Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad. However, the shades were dramatic. MI and Punjab needed a second Super Over to have an eventual winner after scores were initially tied at 176/6 before the first Super Over also finished level at five runs apiece. It finally ended in favour of KXIP, but how cool was that? One of the finest days of cricket IPL has ever provided.

19. Best Moments from IPL 2020 Cricket: Rahul Tewatia Onslaught

Rahul Tewatia! Remember the name? Well, it was purely unfortunate that Star Sports didn’t have Ian Bishop to call that particular moment but will the folklore care? It was one of the greatest moments as a cricketer when you would beat the odds and the world at the same time to showcase the elitism of a sportsman. It was cricket’s very own eureka moment when Tewatia, under fire for losing the game for the Royals straight up till that moment, took the attack on Sheldon Cottrell and landed RR a victory for the ages.

18. Best Moments from IPL 2020 Cricket: Virat Kohli innings against CSK

Image: Twitter/@IPL

One of the greatest pleasures of watching Virat Kohli bat is the acceleration he provides at the backend, which in T20 cricket  has now become far and few in between. But in Dubai, Kohli showed his amazing ability by taking down the Chennai Super Kings bowlers like a fish takes to the water. His batting resembled the age-old titanic progression and could the world be any more surprised? His 90 runs was the multi-faceted T20 batting in its coolest avatar.

17. Best Moments from IPL 2020 Cricket: Jofra Archer’s sixathon against CSK

Image: Twitter/@IPL

Sharjah and sixes are a love-story planned by God on a Sunday. And the first true hack of it was provided by Jofra Archer when the Barbadian took down Lungi Ngidi for a sixathon. Steve Smith and Sanju Samson had given an earlier glimpse of it but what Archer showed at the backend in the CSK-RR game proved to be the eventual difference. Not for nothing that Archer calls himself an all-rounder and that day, he proved the very description come true.

16. Best Moments from IPL 2020 Cricket: Nicholas Pooran incredible save

Image: Twitter/@IPL

The game between Kings XI Punjab and Rajasthan Royals will be remembered for eternity for multiple reasons. Agarwal’s century, Samson’s brilliance, Tewatia’s jaw-dropping madness but as the curtain closes, the world will never forget the save from one and only Nicholas Pooran who defied gravity for the save of the decade. The Caribbean star dived full length over the rope to catch the ball before throwing it back to the field of play within milliseconds to ensure the greatest save of all-time. You must have done something right to get a high praise form Sachin Tendulkar and Pooran was definitely lucky that day.

15. Best Moments from IPL 2020 Cricket: Shikhar Dhawan back-to-back century

Image: Twitter/@IPL

Shikhar Dhawan has hardly ever taken the IPL stage by storm but this 2020 edition was different in many counts? Not only has he made himself a contender for one of the finest reinventions this season, but also his back-to-back century against CSK and KXIP became the first occurrence in the history of IPL. Dhawan was the fulcrum and the glue that binds DC in an otherwise disappointing top-order batting by the side in 2020.

14. Best Moments from IPL 2020 Cricket: MS Dhoni’s spectacular catch vs KKR

Image: Twitter/@IPL

Over the years, MS Dhoni provided many moments of thrill and magic yet his bat remained spectacularly silent this season, rendering his call for an exit from the league pretty much a valid option. But what he showed behind the stumps was one for eternity when Shivam Mavi edged one behind the stumps off Dwayne Bravo. Dhoni juggled it in the first attempt but redeemed himself right back on time to see the back of Mavi in some fashion. Old? What old?

13. Best Moments from IPL 2020 Cricket: Pandey’s blinder against Mumbai Indians

Image: Twitter/@IPL

It was not the only catch that made it to our list as the excellent Manish Pandey grabbed one spot of his thanks to his otherworldly effort against Mumbai Indians. After a well-settled Ishan Kishan threatened to take the game away from SRH’s clutch by diving full length to get hold of the ball. IPL’s Twitter handle called it “Catch marvel: SuperMan-ish”. Possibly, it was even better.

12. Best Moments from IPL 2020 Cricket: The Nattu magic against Superman ABD

Image: Twitter/@IPL

RCB didn’t show up in the IPL eliminator but the game was far from a boring exercise. The moment T Natarajan bowled a cross-seam delivery outside leg stump, it dipped magnificently, leaving the RCB talisman in a state of flux. De Villiers cleared his front leg to sash the ball to the leg-side but alas! The leather sneaked under to have its very own moment of magic and Natu became the star all the way. His yorker was a serial killer this season and rightfully landed him an India call-up for the first-season ever.

11. Best Moments from IPL 2020 Cricket: Resurgent Stoinis

Image: Twitter/@IPL

After 59 incredible matches, do you still remember what happened when Marcus Stoinis played the first game for Delhi Capitals? I know you do. Because can you forget that? The final over of the Delhi innings, bowled by Punjab’s Chris Jordan, saw the Aussie hit a first-ball six. A wide later, he hit three consecutive fours before launching another biggie. So lucky that he was on that day that even the ball he was dismissed was a no-ball and that saw Stoinis resurging to become a fierce player for the side this season.

10. Best Moments from IPL 2020 Cricket: Mohammed Siraj’s opening spell against KKR

Image: Twitter/@IPL

49? Well, no. KKR did one better but the night, of course, belonged to Mohammed Siraj who gave RCB fans a lot of fun in one spell. With 4-2-8-3, Siraj bowled the most economical spell in the IPL history to give RCB a chance to return in the playoff contention. That one spell busted a lot of myth and even resulted in a Test call-up (Well, it could be attributed to his A-performance but still) and a boost to a flagging career. Definitely a moment of the IPL.

9. Best Moments from IPL 2020 Cricket: The Jadeja-Du Plessis tag-team effort

Image: Twitter/@IPL

CSK might have been an ageing team and don’t possess the same fielding standard as many other teams, but hang on. Don’t they produce some stellar efforts from time to time? And when they met their bogey team KKR for the 21st time in the history of the IPL to showcase what they can do when they get their act together. Two of the finest fielders in the business were on show. After Narine hit a ball to mid-wicket, the Saurashtra man dived parallel to the ground but before skidding on to the boundary tri-angle, he tossed the ball to Faf du Plessis who was running from long-on. The save defied a lot of optics.

8. Best Moments from IPL 2020 Cricket: Ravindra Jadeja last ball finish

Image: Twitter/@IPL

Given we’re with Jadeja and KKR, it is pretty prudent to go back and revel in another moment of absolute serendipity. After Chennai lost the winning plot once again, Jadeja brought his defiant figure back to the fore, hitting two consecutive sixes after it seemed like a lost cause. You know you are always in for a treat when Jadeja is there but that was an other-worldly day when he just meant business. 31* off 11 balls to win a last-ball thriller helped CSK’s cause as it resulted in them not ending up as the wooden spooners.

7. Best Moments from IPL 2020 Cricket: Maniac Rashid at it again

Image: Twitter/@IPL

You know Rashid and his ability to keep it economical but to this extent? This was freakish for god sake when the Afghan superstar pushed Delhi Capitals to the brink and ended their dominance in a maligned manner. 7/3 is the stuff of dreams bowler wishes to a genie but Rashid secures with eyes open, mouth wide and with a firing eye.

 6. Best Moments from IPL 2020 Cricket: Superman ABD creates traffic halt in Sharjah

Image: Twitter/@IPL

AB de Villiers can do anything and everything and you would be better placed if you don’t challenge that universal truth. So much so that, he made Sharjah look pale in front of Bangalore’s Cubbon Park with a gigantic six off Kamlesh Nagarkoti that brought about a traffic halt in the city. The ball, after crossing the Sharjah Cricket Ground, hit two cars on the road. Just the ABD things, you know?

5. Best Moments from IPL 2020 Cricket: Mandeep Singh’s tribute to his father

Image: Twitter/@IPL

Sachin Tendulkar and his sky-looking celebration is a story for the lore and who knows Mandeep might have already put himself in the mission after doing what he did against KKR. After losing his father a couple of days ahead of the game against KKR , the brave Punjab cricketer batted through the pain. And after reaching his 50, he paid a lovely tribute to him by looking at the sky. For me, it was the bravest and emotional moment of the season, pretty much in line with the tribute of Nitish Rana who pulled off a jersey, written Surinder on the back of it, to pay tribute to his late father in law.

4. Best Moments from IPL 2020 Cricket: Chris Gayle eruption

Image: Twitter/@IPL

Before every single season of the IPL in the last three-four years, Chris Gayle is written off by the fans and pundits alike but he knows how to shut everyone up with his incredible resurgence. Punjab made the same mistake this season by not having in the playing XI in the first half of the tournament but boy did he make a statement afterwards? Gayle was all fire and brimstone, scoring at an alarming consistency and even getting close to score a century. When he was dismissed for 99 against Rajasthan Royals thanks to a fantastic Jofra Archer delivery, Gayle threw his bat in frustration, which shows his fire in the belly is as fierce as ever.

3. Best Moments from IPL 2020 Cricket: Fierce Shami and a spell redefined

Image: Twitter/@IPL

We have talked about Mohammed Siraj and his spell against KKR. So how can we not discuss another breath-taking spell of the season, delivered by the inimitable Mohammed Shami, to the same batting line-up that became a butt of a lot of jokes? Facing in Sharjah, a bowling graveyard, Shami swung the ball away from the right-hander as if it was the first session of a Test match. Shubman Gill, Rahul Tripathi, and skipper Dinesh Karthik left stunned in front of a fiery Shami who couldn’t do anything wrong that evening.

2. Best Moments from IPL 2020 Cricket: The P in Pandya stands for Power

Image: Twitter/@IPL

When Hardik gets into the action, the opposition better beware. The Royals got a first-hand experience of the same with the younger Pandya hitting four sixes off Ankit Rajpoot in the 18th over to get going before Kartik Tyagi found himself at the receiving end of it, conceding three sixes and two boundaries in the last five balls of the innings. Hardik, by then, had scored 60* off 21 balls, striking at 285.71.

1. Best Moments from IPL 2020 Cricket: SKY’s “I got this” celebration

Image: Twitter/@IPL

After not getting an India call-up for the tour Down Under, which he solely deserved thanks to his rate of run-scoring in all the previous editions of the IPL and the domestic cricket, anyone else would’ve been dejected and frowned straight away. But not Suryakumar Yadav who breathes runs and sixes every day of his life. Against RCB, MI were chasing a total of 165 and the Mumbaikar stood tall. After getting to a half-century, he pulled off a special celebration “I got this” – possibly as an indictment to the non-selection in the national team – but it surely left a lasting impression. SKY has been the limit for the stylish Surya.
